Vienna is famous for its imperial palaces, grand coffeehouses, and world-class classical music. But beyond the elegant architecture and cultural landmarks lies another reason travelers fall in love with Austria’s capital: the food.
The best part? You don’t need a Michelin-star budget to enjoy authentic Viennese cuisine. From cozy Baisl (traditional Viennese eateries) to bustling late-night street food stands, Vienna offers delicious meals that are both satisfying and affordable.
Here, we’ll explore two classic local restaurants and two must-try street food experiences that prove Vienna will never let you leave hungry.
Figlmüller (Wollzeile) Famous for its legendary Wiener Schnitzel that’s bigger than the plate.
Few restaurants are as iconic in Vienna as Figlmüller. Since 1905, this family-run institution has been serving what many consider the city's most famous schnitzel. The secret is simple: ultra-thin veal, chicken or pork, coated in a light, crispy breading and fried to golden perfection.
The result is a schnitzel so large that it hangs over the edges of the plate, making it a must-see—and must-eat—for visitors.
Why go: A century-old family recipe, consistently excellent quality, and one of Vienna’s most beloved dining traditions.
Pro Tip: Reserve your table at least two days in advance, or arrive around 5 PM to avoid the big dommer crowds.

Gasthauskultur (the culture of traditional restaurants) is all around the city. Tafelspitz (boiled beef with apple-horseradish sauce, vegetables and broth) is a dish to look for. There are many places serving Tafelspitz in Vienna and each one of them makes it a little different.
Popular places to go are Huth Gastwirtschaft and Plachutta Restaurant Wollzeile, my personal favorites to take my guests to if I want them to try authentic Viennese cuisine.
Why go: Authentic local atmosphere, traditional recipes, and menus that often feel delightfully old-school.

When we get to street food. Vienna has a special cathegory of its own - Würstelstand (sausage stand). No visit to Vienna can be compleet without it.
One of the most famous ones is Bitzinger, located near Albertinaplatz and open late into the evening. It’s a favorite stop for locals heading home after a night out and tourists looking for an affordable bite.
What to order: Käsekrainer—a smoked sausage filled with melted cheese that oozes out with every bite.
How to eat it: Pair it with a slice of dark bread, a generous amount of sharp mustard, some fresh horse radish and, if you're in the mood, a cold Austrian beer.
The combination is simple, satisfying, and unmistakably Viennese.

For a broader taste of Vienna's street food culture, head to Naschmarkt, the city's most famous market.
Stretching for over a kilometer, the market is packed with spice vendors, produce stalls, bakeries, and small eateries. While exploring, keep an eye out for a bakery counter selling Leberkäsesemmel.
What to order: A Leberkäsesemmel—a warm slice of Austrian-style meatloaf tucked into a crispy bread roll.
It’s inexpensive, filling, and perfect for eating on the go as you browse the market.
Vibe: Grab your sandwich and wander through rows of colorful spice stalls, local food vendors, and antique stands.

If you still have room for dessert, try Kaiserschmarrn, Austria’s famous shredded pancake dusted with powdered sugar and often served with fruit compote.
One of the best places to enjoy this sweet classic is Café Demel, a historic Viennese café known for preserving traditional Austrian desserts.
Whether enjoyed as a snack or a full dessert, Kaiserschmarrn is comfort food at its finest.

Whether you're sitting down for a legendary schnitzel at Figlmüller, enjoying a traditional Tafelspitz in a cozy Gasthaus, or grabbing a cheese-filled Käsekrainer at midnight, Vienna's food scene is all about honest flavors, hearty portions, and great value.
The city proves that some of the best meals aren't found in luxury dining rooms—they're found at neighborhood restaurants and bustling street food stalls where locals have been eating for generations.
